Practitioner Description:

I give individual lessons in Wilmslow (near the town centre with off-road parking) from 9AM-8PM Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and from 9AM-4PM on Saturdays. My rooms are at 4 Chapel Lane, near the corner of the Alderley Road. Lessons last 30-40 minutes, according to your needs, and cost ?40

I also teach Adult Education classes at the Wilmslow Guild (Tel: 01625-523903) with the next course starting on Thursday evenings from September 23rd 2004, and occasionally in Knutsford. The Adult Education classes are not a substitute for individual lessons but are a useful introduction to the principles of the Technique.

I have been qualified as a teacher for more than 18 years and have been teaching in Wilmslow for 13 years. I am the main assistant to the director of the Manchester training course for teachers of the Alexander Technique and give teaching supervision to several of the less experienced teachers in this area.

The Alexander Technique is not a treatment, but rather a method whereby you can learn to use yourself better in everyday activities. It can help in cases of chronic back pain, neck pain, etc, where misuse of the body is either the cause of the pain or an exacerbating or precipitating factor. It is also used by actors, musicians, riders and others to improve the quality of performance and is taught in most of the major music and drama colleges in Britain.

Just a few lessons can change some of the habits of a lifetime. As the Technique is an educational method, there is no fixed number of lessons that is recommended, although teachers usually suggest that about 20 lessons constitute an 'introduction'. This is defined as reaching the point where you are able to apply the principles of the Technique at least some of the time in your everyday life without the supervision of a teacher, thereby progressing further on your own. People vary in how long this takes, although I am usually able to give a more accurate prediction after one or two lessons.

The best way to proceed is usually to try a few lessons and see what you think. You are never asked to make any sort of commitment, so it is easy just to try the Technique and see how you get on.

If you would like further information, the Society of Teachers has a web site at www.stat.org.uk and of course you may telephone me to discuss anything, or to arrange a first lesson, on 01625-548233
