All encompassing manual
This book is the first book on running I have read. However, as a reader of running/sports magazines (Running Fitness, Runner's World, 220 Triathlon, etc.) it is clear that Bob Glover has to be one of the best coaches around; his advice throughout is repeated by all of these magazines - they can't all be wrong!
All aspects of running, including cross-training and how to juggle running and work/family (the runner's triangle), are discussed and while the facts and figures are all American, the same is true for the UK in most respects.
This book can be 'dipped into' very easily, and the easy-going conversational style make it a fun read - this is no heavy academic tome - but the information is all there; it is over 700 pages of useful stuff that even a lot of more experienced runners may not realise.
Another point which may seem rather weak to some - it's compact enough to take away; my copy has been to France, Spain, Greece - and yes, it has information on running while abroad or away from home. I still refer back to it regularly, and it has definately proved its worth
If you buy one book on running, make this it!
This book turned me from a 20 minutes-at-a-time jogger to a 15 mile-a-week runner. Lots of advice on cross-training & an introduction to the more "spiritual" aspects of running. Pretty much jargon-free & written for (and by) real people! A book for your whole self, not just the running part.
If you want to start running - start here
This book got me ( a flabby 35 year old who hadn't exercised for about 10 years) running 5 years ago and it is still the book I turn to when in need of inspiration or advice.
Clearly written in a style guaranteed not to put off the beginner while providing enough for those who have been running for a while. It covers everything you need to know (plus lots more) on training plans, exercising, warm ups, injuries and gear.
Why only 4 stars? Because this second edition is fatter than the first without seeming to add anything - feels like it needs a training regime!
